I'm sorry, I'm just kind of losing my mind. My brother got this iPad maybe 5 or so years ago, since then Apple has stopped updating the software for it at ios 9.3.5 they are now on ios 17 something on all the newer products.

Since I can no longer update, Apple has decided that means I can no longer install apps. Instead of being able to install an older version of the app I'm wanting I'm left with an expensive paperweight.

Fuck Apple. Fuck planned obsolescence.

I left him on in my drawer for three weeks starting at 100% and the battery had dropped about half. Using a browser on him is slow but the rest of the system is as fast as I remember. I can still out-type the buffer than it uses for keypress inputs but that’s been a bug since forever. The speaker on this thing is surprisingly competent, even if it’s just one. The OS is stuck at iOS 9.3.5, so a lot of new software doesn’t work anymore. I might have to jailbreak him. I don’t think that will help much, but it’s something.

There's all my old class notes, mostly Biology and English. I started doing electronic notes in primary school, first on my Desktop, for studying, and later when I took a computer to class for live notetaking. Things that have changed: My notes are now True Markdown in plain text rather than my custom rtf markdown. I now know LaTeX, so I’ve been able to include inline mathematics in my class notes. If I run my economics notes from last year through pandoc they come out with full equations. I take them on a real computer in neovim rather than in a Word Processor.

I don’t think I’ll ever get a new iPad, if I get a tablet it’ll be an x86 tablet or an ARMbook I can dump Linux on. One of my friends got OpenBSD onto a Gigabyte S10m a while back, which looked interesting.

I do still have a big archive of furry art I took off the local forums, my local copy of the first chapters of Gunnerkrigg Court, and a good few hundred screenshots of Wikipedia pages because I didn't have internet on this while out and about so I'd go home, screenshot things I planned on reading the next day and then actually read it at school.

I have been using the original IPad 2 for all my DnD prep work since the winter of 2011. It's had a lot of herps, derps, and its OS is so old it can't be updated past iOS 9.3.5. But today, it decided that it wouldn't register words from either my Bluetooth keyboard or its own integrated touchscreen keyboard. If it can't be typed on, it can no longer be used for prep.

Sad day. In totally unrelated news, if anyone has any Android tablets they'd recommend, I'm all ears.
